The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is the governmental agency responsible for registering and titling automobiles and other motor vehicles as well as licensing drivers in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of 2008, the DMV has 7,698,416 active registrations, 1,696,795 (22%) of which are special or personalized plates.[3] In 2008, 1,624,146 pairs of license plates were sold, with 831,361 of them being personalized plates.[4]
As of 2008, the DMV has 5,301,182 licensed drivers, with 2,224,150 drivers license related transactions occurring in 2008.[5]

For eight days beginning August 25, 2010, the Virginia DMV's computer system had an outage. The DMV was unable to process driver's licenses and other important transactions. The incident cost the state $1.2 million. It was the worst DMV computer outage since 2007.[7][8]
